What to know
- A Famous Players theatre in Prince George, B.C. has gone viral for an employee’s hand drawn poster for the new Spider-Man movie.
- Drake Landon drew a poster featuring the Spooderman meme, which has since made the rounds on social media.
- Cineplex has since taken the scrappy poster down and replaced it with real Spider-Man promotional posters.
Spooderman, Spooderman, does whatever a spooder can!
That’s the reference Drake Landon made when the Famous Players 6 he worked at in Prince George, B.C. didn’t receive the official promotional poster in time for release day.
To compensate for not having any movie posters on hand for the first showings of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Landon took matters into his own hands, armed with a black marker and a large sheet of paper.
The hand drawn poster shows a drawing of “Spooderman,” an internet meme that first went viral in 2012, accompanied by the movie title (Spider-man: Brand New Day) and a note apologizing for the makeshift poster.
“Sorry! We never received the real posters! Sorry for any inconveniences,” Landon wrote at the bottom of his creation.
The heartwarming poster has since made the rounds on Reddit after social media users shared the poster to r/princegeorge and r/marvelstudios. Both posts have racked up a combined 55 thousand upvotes.
‘Never expected it to get this big’
The internet has been loving Landon’s hand drawn poster, with both posts receiving hundreds of comments. The top comment under the r/marvelstudios subreddit reads, “I guess this is what she meant by ‘big potato’,” a reference to a scene in Spider-Man: Brand New Day where on the of the Avengers, Yelena, tells Spider-Man that she handles, “big potato threats,” while the street-level crime he deals with is, “small potato stuff.”
Landon himself, who goes by Single_Storm 9743 on Reddit, explained, “I work there, we didn’t get the poster in due to shipment issues, so my boss asked me to draw it, so I did. Never expected it to get this big lol.”
In the r/princegeorge subreddit, one user commented that Landon should draw movie posters on the regular, writing, “Drake needs to do one random movie poster every rotation.” Another person responded with, “Yes!!! I would go to the theatre just to see it!! Maybe he can also sign prints.”
Spooderman’s theatrical run is over
The improvised poster’s run at Famous Players has since come to an end.
Cineplex replaced Landon’s drawing once the official Spider-Man: Brand New Day promotional material arrived.
Considering how far photos of his version have travelled online, Spooderman’s legacy will live on via social media posts and in our hearts.
