JILL SCOTT

Rating: NNNN

From the sound of it, whatever divine entity was pulling Scott’s creative strings while she put Beautifully Human together didn’t rest for a second. The Philly coffeehouse diva’s third record is as sweet and sincere as a seven-year-old’s hand-drawn valentine. Her gorgeous voice ranges from syrup to brass, and her lyrics are at once simple and sophisticated. On the breezy The Fact Is (I Need You), she displays strength with a touching dose of self-deprecation: “I can kill the spider over my bed / although it’s hard because I’m scared.” Other highlights on this highlight-packed disc include the first-ever anti-George W. Bush slow jam, My Petition, and Rasool, a didactic, poetic street narrative. You’ll eventually reach these cuts if you can get the devastatingly catchy Golden single off repeat.
