Do It Yourself projects are sometimes a good way to save some money when it comes to home repairs, but attempting to fix or install big projects like eavestroughs may cost you more in the long run.

If you’re looking to add or repair gutters, you should consider using a professional to get the job done in a timely and cost effective manner.

Hamilton-based roofing company D’Angelo and Sons guarantees to do just that, and to put the crowning touch on your home.

The family-owned business has been serving the community since 1978 and has been ranked in the top three per cent of installers across North America.

“We’re Hamilton’s Roofing Company, local and committed to providing quality roofing that protects your home from the elements and harmonizes its overall design,” D’Angelo and Sons says on its website.

As the weather gets warmer, the roofing experts are ready to help Ontarians with their housing repair needs, including replacing or installing eavestroughs, or gutters, to get homes into tip top shape.

“Soffit, fascia, eavestroughs and downspouts are crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of your home, preventing water damage, wet basements, and unwanted animals,” the company says.

To help homeowners prepare to install or get their gutters maintained, D’Angelo and Sons has provided an estimated price breakdown to get the job done:

  • Labour- An ordinary contractor will take around seven hours to complete a 50-foot segment. Therefore, it may take up to three days to complete the job, translating to a total labour cost of $2200.
  • Removal and Disposal- Professional eaves removal and disposal will cost you around $100.
  • Cleaning- It’s recommended to have your eaves cleaned at least three times every year. The average cost of professional eavestrough cleaning is around $100 per support. If you decide to get a system, the prices could range between $1000 for a DIY and upwards of $5000 for a specialist/professional set up.
  • Screens- You might decide to install downspout screens in addition to utilizing gun guards. Downspout screens allow water to drain out instantly by redirecting floating debris from the downspout opening.

D’Angelo and Sons says the cheapest and best performing options to install eavestrough in Ontario are seamless aluminum gutters, which cost about $15 per linear foot.

A more expensive option are copper gutters, which cost more than $35 per foot.

“Eavestrough installation cost depends greatly on the materials you select and the contractor you work with. The installation of 200 linear feet of gutters will cost you about $1,500, if you install the gutter yourself. If you hire a contractor, the cost can go up to $3,000,” D’Angelo and Sons says.

Installing 100 linear feet of gutters typically cost homeowners between $2,500 and $3,500, whereas copper eavestrough installation could cost between $2,500 and $4,000 for 100 linear feet.

Although installation can be costly, D’Angelo and Sons says it is important to keep in mind the expensive problems that old or damaged gutters can cause, such as eroding the foundation, rot on the roof, mold in the attack and flooding in the basement.

Other factors that could impact the cost of installing gutters include the style of the home, quality of the gutter, additional accessories needed and the installation method.

The longevity of gutters depends on the material used to make them, according to D’Angelo and Sons. Steel gutters can have a lifespan of 20 years, while copper can remain in good condition for up to 50 years with minimal to no maintenance. Weather elements and maintenance, however, will play a role in how long each material lasts.
