Grant Van Gameren launched his new Bar Isabel last week.
Not to be confused with the bar off the lobby of the Hotel Isabella, ex-Black Hoof charcuterie king Grant van Gameren's Bar Isabel (797 College, at Shaw, 416-532-2222, barisabel.com) launched with considerable fanfare last weekend. And, yes, there are cold cuts, some dozen varieties including pancetta steccata and buffalo slinzega, as well as roasted blood sausage, fried rabbit parts and stewed tripe. Sounds offal!
Hogtown's mania for Japanese noodles has finally hit midtown with the opening of Bushi Udon Kappo (1404 Yonge, at Pleasant, 416-323-9988, bushiudon.com). As the name suggests, the focus is thick house-made udon paired with broth or various meat 'n' veggie toppings. Anyone who remembers Sakawaya out on the Danforth will recognize co-owner/chef Koki Oguchi behind the bar.
Further uptown, cult fave Dr. Laffa (3023 Bathurst, at Stormont, 647-352-9000, drlaffa.com) has added a second location. Same kosher Israeli-Iraqi menu, crazier parking lot. Expect crowds of Biblical proportions.
