General resigns

Guy Rawlings, the golden boy of the downtown dining scene, has announced that he’s leaving the critically acclaimed Brockton General (1321 Dundas W, at Rusholme, 647-342-6104).

“I’m moving on to focus on the opening of my own restaurant,” says Rawlings who started out washing dishes at Milestones. “It’s something I’ve been planning for awhile.”

Though unexpected, the split comes as no surprise to General owners Pam Thomson and Brie Read.

“They knew when they hired me that I wouldn’t be there long and that I had a goal of opening my own spot,” says the ex-Cowbell sous. “So it’s time!”

Rawlings isn’t quite sure where he’s going as yet.

“I’m taking my time to find the right location,” Rawlings continues, adding that the menu will be different than the one he currently serves at the minimally equipped Portuguese sports bar.

“At Brockton General, I cooked within my ethics but in a format that made sense for the space. But I’ll still use 100% Ontario produce and whole animals direct from farmers.”

Rawlings isn’t leaving the good General in the lurch. In fact, he’s helping Thomson and Read find his replacement.

“It’s going to be a positive transition. There’s been some good talent walk through the door. We’re looking for someone who’s willing to grasp the opportunity and help the Brockton General keep growing.”
