Greg’s does the Distillery District

Greg Mahon wasn’t planning on opening a second eponymous ice cream parlour in the Distillery District, but they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Well, not initially.

“They approached me about 10 years ago but I turned them down,” says Greg’s Greg Mahon. “I figured nobody’s going to want to go there. But I’ve been looking for a new production facility and the space was perfect. Tiny, but perfect.”

Like most businesses in the rabbit warren that is the grounds of the former Gooderham and Worts booze factory, the new Greg’s (32 Gristmill Lane, at Parliament, 416-961-4734, gregsicecream.com) can be hard to find, hidden as it is down an alleyway that runs southeast from the corner of Parliament and Mill Streets. Look for the Segway rental or smell the pizza exhaust from Cafe Uno and you’re almost there.

We love Greg’s roasted marshmallow flavour but is there anything new on the horizon?

“We’re always coming up with new ones,” says Mahon. “In fact, I have a flavour meeting later this week.”

Have you ever considering doing extreme ice cream?

“You mean something like bacon?” laughs Mahon who also makes a point of not offering gelato or sorbet. “Most people stick to chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. They don’t want meat in their ice cream.”
