The vegan takeout spot struck gold in the PATH as hundreds of desk jockeys lined up for quinoa bowls, smoothies and salads that wouldn’t put them in a coma by the afternoon.
It’s been so successful that they’ve since opened up two more locations underground. Go for the First Canadian box ($9.29): quinoa and tempeh topped with colourful kale, pomegranate seeds, radish, cabbage, carrots, beets, yam, sprouts, sesame and sunflower seeds and a chia-tamari-maple sauce. Crunchy, colourful, perfect for a gloomy January day.

Greens and juice aren’t all there is to healthy eating. Fish are rich in good fats and protein, especially when not deep-fried and served with chips. Order a traditional chirashi ($21) or the sashimi don ($15), just slices of the best raw fish on a bed of sushi rice. This little spot tucked on a side street steps from the Eaton Centre is one of the best bangs for your buck in the city.

Eating healthy Mediterranean-style won’t leave you feeling like you ate a bowl of air. Dip whole wheat pitas in bowls of garlicky hummus drizzled with olive oil ($5.75) or smokey babaganuj ($5.75) and then order a plate off the grill menu like chicken breast ($15.50, $9.95 at lunch) or juicy salmon kebabs ($18.95, $12.95 at lunch) that come with sides of vegetables and rice. Be sure to save room for some sweet, sweet baklava ($5.75) at the end. Hey, you’ve got to treat yourself once in a while.
