Turkey on the town

Got a hankering for turkey and all the trimmings this weekend but would rather leave all that heavy lifting to someone else?

Out on the Danforth, Ed Ho’s Globe Bistro (124 Danforth, at Broadview, 416-466-2000, thinkglobaleatlocal.ca) celebrates the harvest with a $35 three-course prix fixe Thanksgiving blow-out on Sunday October 9 for brunch and dinner. Start with curried celery and apple soup tossed with naan crisps and cumin seeds or an autumnal hearts of romaine salad in spicy pumpkin vinaigrette. Follow with roasted free-range local turkey with barley risotto, Red Fife pear stuffing and smoked bacon gravy. Finish with peach ‘n’ apple crumble in cardamom crème anglaise or pumpkin pie tarts dolloped with cranberry preserves.

The same spread is available at Bistro’s sister restos Earth Rosedale (1055 Yonge, at Roxborough, 416-551-9890) and Earth Bloor West (2448 Bloor W, at Jane, 416-763-2222) on Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9 at brunch and dinner. Reservations at all are highly recommended.

You’ll need them as well at Edward Levesque’s Kitchen (1290 Queen E, at Hastings, 416-465-3600, edwardlevesque.ca) on Sunday October 9 when the ornery chef whips up his annual festive $38 three-course prix fixe. Fancy an endive Stilton salad or chicken liver pate on raisin toasts, free-range roast turkey with a choice of three sides like garlic mash or Brussels sprouts with pancetta and carrot cake or pumpkin pie for dessert? The 6 pm seating’s already sold-out but resos are still available for 8 pm.

On Sunday October 9 from 2 to 9:30 pm and Monday October 10 from noon to 11 pm, Allen’s (143 Danforth, at Broadview, 416-463-3086, allens.to) offers a $38 three-course prix fixe that begins with either butternut squash corn chowder or smoked trout salad in horseradish dressing. Roasted free-range turkey comes in the company of chestnut and leek stuffing and Dijon mustard gravy while mustard-glazed smoked ham rubs shoulders with sprouts and cheesy cauliflower mash. Save room for a slice of pumpkin layer cake. Pair each course with wine for another 20 bucks or take the whole thing home for $32.

Out on the hipster strip, Brockton General (1321 Dundas W, at Rusholme, 647-342-6104, brocktongeneral.com) are still taking reservations on Sunday October 9 from 6 pm for their first festive feast. $35 gets you a family-style supper of roasted Heritage turkey, cassoulet, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted root vegetables and Mom’s boozy cranberry sauce. Vegans can flip the bird for gnocchi.

Across from the old Don Jail, vegan valhalla Green Earth (385 Broadview, at Gerrard, 416-778-9199, greenearthveggie.com) goes the meat and dairy-free route for the entire long weekend. Expect slices of soy-protein bird stuffed with celery, mushrooms and chickpeas sided with mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, stir-fried seasonal veggies and cranberry sauce. Pumpkin cheesecake pie soup and non-alcoholic cider to boot, all for $18.95. Reservations accepted for Saturday October 8 from 11 am, Sunday October 9 from 2 pm and Monday October 10 from 11 am.

Stuck all on your lonesome with nowhere to go? Smoke’s Poutinerie (218 Adelaide W, at Simcoe, 416-599-2873, and others, smokespoutinerie.com) is doing a special Thanksgiving-inspired take-out poutine topped with turkey, dressing, sweet baby peas and cranberry sauce through October 23.
