A new, immersive one-stop shop opens in Toronto catering to textured hair types

A new Black-owned beauty and supply store opened in Toronto offering an immersive one-stop shop experience. The shop offers a retail and in-studio component.

Take Khair offers more than 500 products from over 50 in-demand brands from hair, hair accessories, skincare, makeup and so much more. Take Khair was founded by sisters Mackenzie and Hailie Campbell. The sisters said Take Khair has been in the works since 2020 but finally opened their doors in August of this year.

INSPIRATION

The sisters said they came up with the concept for Take Khair because they felt there was a lack of beauty-supply stores that couldn’t provide enough educational knowledge for people with curly and textured hair types.

“It was kind of discouraging when you would go to a beauty-supply store where people don’t really have the educational knowledge for you when you’re in those stores. You kind of feel overwhelmed, so we wanted to provide a welcoming open environment where people can come in and understand a bit about their hair,” Mackenzie said to the Brandon Gonez Show.

They’ve made it their mission to create a welcoming space for people to feel comfortable asking for hair styling tips and product recommendations in hopes of leaving their clients feeling confident and empowered.

BOOKING SERVICES

“We do place a heavy emphasis on individuals with curly hair, but at Take Khair we do offer products and services for individuals with all types of hair,” Hailie says.

Take Khair offers complimentary hair consultations to help clients understand their hair type and assist them with product recommendations to help individuals know how to style their hair and feel confident doing so.

Take Khair offers a variety of hair services from haircuts, wash and style, quick styles, knotless braids, cornrows, twists/individual braids, locs, weaves, ponytails and removal. Prior to a hair appointment, the client is asked to fill out an intake form that’s fully customizable to their wants and needs from choosing the hair they want, how they want their baby hairs laid, uploading a reference photo for a specific style, and including any allergies or sensitivities so thestylist can provide a seamless and relaxing experience.

“We’ve also built the price in of the hair, so you literally just show up,” Hailie says.

INTERACTIVE CLASSES

The sisters say they’d like Take Khair to also be a community hub and on a monthly basis hope to partner up with like-minded organizations to host in-store events catered around beauty and wellness. In November, they’re planning on a cocktail making class. In January 2024 they’ll be offering a free financial literacy course for hair stylists, and in February they’re offering a jewellery making class in celebration of ‘Galentine’s Day.’

NEXT STEPS

Hailie and Mackenzie make it their priority to be there for their clients by listening to the client’s needs, wants and concerns and offering them the correct tools and resources to achieve everyone’s individual goals.

“Embracing that natural hair and that natural journey, just honestly understanding it’s not impossible, it’s not hard, it’s just knowing what you need for your hair,” Mackenzie says.

Their next steps is to eventually expand and open more locations, one of them being in Durham. You can follow them on Instagram and TikTok to check out their latest posts, plus their website to book for services.

Take Khair is located at 574 St Clair Ave W, Toronto.
