More than just a retail hot spot for picking up the usual skateboarding accoutrements, Kensington Market's Adrift Skate Shop functions like an inner city community centre for skateheads.
Featuring plenty o' skating footage out front, a half-pipe in the back (for rainy days), indoor and outdoor chill space, a fridge full of bottled water, plus weekend pro workshops and even a kids' summer camp, Adrift - owned by 23-year-old female skater Lyndsey Westfall - has got it 360-degrees-covered. And because tomorrow's star skaters are today's spoiled children, they even carry kid-size gear to get them hooked on the street sport young - and for life.
Westfall's picks: Vans "Van Halen" ladies' skate high shoes, $74.95; Nike SB "FC" men's shoes, $110; Lakai men's "MJ High" shoes, $108.95; Ipath men's "Grasshopper" shoes, $114.95; Neckface "Krooked" pro board, $80; and Neckface "Giant" pro board, $80.
Look for: Excellent service sans BS, skateboarding camp (for kids 14 or younger) July 18 to 22, changing window art created by local artists, a Shopdeck Merck Stick and the rad store team skate video.
Store hours: Monday 3 to 8 pm, Tuesday to Saturday noon to 8 pm, Sunday noon to 7 pm.
