Back to school style: Student primer

Centennial College

ANDREW WALLACE, 18 (communications and media)

Back-to-school tip Don’t over-think it because it’s a new environment. Do everything to the best of your ability.

What do you love about Centennial? It has a nice atmosphere and a good community.

Favourite thing to do around campus? I dig that the school is by Greektown. That whole strip is where I grab lunch. Caffe Demetre (400 Danforth, 416-778-6654, caffedemetre.com) is my favourite.

My student style I like a lot of urban stores and Levi’s jeans (Eaton Centre, 220 Yonge, 416-408-0372, levi.ca). I’m from Brampton, so Bramalea City Centre (25 Peel Centre, Brampton, 905-793-9417, bramaleacitycentre.ca) is where I shop.

Seneca

NAN FANG, 24 (fashion arts)

Back-to-school tip You need to practise a lot for this program. A lot of handwork, stitching and sewing.

What do you love about Seneca? I’ll leave with a lot of connections for a future career.

Favourite thing to do around campus? We hang out on the patio on the fourth floor. Sometimes a friend who works at Starbucks delivers drinks to us up there, too.

My student style I’m more into colour in the summer and darker colours for fall, and I’m looking for a leather baseball cap. I usually go to Bayview Village (2901 Bayview, 416-226-0404, bayviewvillageshops.com) and sometimes online to Net-a-Porter (net-a-porter.com).

Humber

ELIZABETH BABERIZ, 24 (early childhood education)

Back-to-school tip Do a lot of research and make sure your program fits the career you’re looking for.

What do you love about Humber? It’s close, and there are a lot of great ECE profs. The classes are small, too.

Favourite thing to do around campus? I always eat at Ackee Tree (205 Humber College, ackeetree.com). It’s a Caribbean fast food restaurant that’s always great.

My student style I’m a big-time thrift shopper. I’ll be going to Value Village (45 Woodbine Downs, 416-675-7450, and others, valuevillage.com) and looking for 80s clothing, especially high-waisted jeans.

OCAD U

REBECCA HORWITZ, 25 (textile production)

Back-to-school tip Try every studio while you have the chance and before you get too far in.

What do you love about OCAD? The possibility to use mixed media and a multidisciplinary approach to further yourself as a creative individual.

Favourite thing to do around campus? OCAD students get free membership to the Art Gallery of Ontario (317 Dundas West, 416-979-6648, ago.net), so I spend a lot of time working in the Galleria Italia.

My student style I love Easy Tiger (1447 Dundas West, 647-748-6161, easytigergoods.com). And I’m addicted to drawstring trousers. I’ve been making my own for fall.

U of T

AMY MICHELLE SMITH, 24 (book and media studies, creative writing)

Back-to-school tip The key thing is timing. Don’t overwhelm yourself with the notion that university is a race.

What do you love about U of T? The beautiful campus. Sitting through lectures in a frigging castle is pretty damn incredible.

Favourite thing to do around campus? Grabbing cheap eats at Mother’s Dumplings (421 Spadina, 416-217-2008, mothersdumplings.com), sipping a cortado at Café Pamenar (307 Augusta, 647-352-3627) or grabbing a beer and writing on the patio at the Embassy (223 Augusta, 416-591-1132).

My student style I’ll be rummaging the sales at Heel Boy (773 Queen West, 416-362-4335, heelboy.com). A simple black dress and a pair of Chucks or boots is my go-to look once fall hits.

George Brown

MICHAEL GIUGA, 22 (introduction to performing arts)

Back-to-school tip Making notes and asking questions are a must. As is making as many friends as possible to discuss what goes on in class.

What do you love about George Brown? Learning new things every day and discussing different ideas with classmates.

Favourite thing to do around campus? Hanging out at Soma Café (32 Tank House, 416-815-7662, somachocolate.com).

My student style Preppy and hipster. I shop at Zara (Eaton Centre, 220 Yonge, 647-288-0333, and others, zara.com), H&M (1 Dundas West, 416-623-2090, and others, hm.com) and Jean Machine (2 Bloor East, 416-929-5097, jeanmachine.com).

York U

JHANELLE JACKSON, 21 (dance and kinesiology)

Back-to-school tip Take advantage of all the opportunities around you. Join sports teams and clubs. Get involved and meet your peers.

What do you love about York? It’s multicultural and diverse.

Favourite thing to do around campus? I like to visit the Underground (4700 Keele, 416-736-5606, myunderground.ca). It’s a restaurant that hosts a ton of pub nights and a great place for students to find employment and a fun time.

My student style It consists of pants, a T-shirt and sweater from Lululemon (Yorkdale, 3401 Dufferin, 416-256-3883, and others, lululemon.com). I dress for comfort, since I spend most of my time in a dance studio.

Ryerson U

KRISTA HESSEY, 19 (journalism)

Back-to-school tip Find a balance between school, work and play. It’s the only way to stay sane. And avoid the falafel in the cafeteria.

What do you love about Ryerson? I love how multiple media courses are integrated and that the profs help you out.

Favourite thing to do around campus? I can be found hidden behind a newspaper at Bull Dog (89 Granby, 416-923-3469, bulldogtoronto.com), RISE Espresso (107 Mutual, 416-895-4611, risecafe.ca) or Balzac’s (122 Bond, 416-597-1700, balzacs.com).

My student style A minimalist outfit with some fun shoes: slouchy sweater, dark jeans, white heels and my new Beara Beara (bearabeara.co.uk) leather backpack.
