940 Queen West, 416-516-7122
You wouldn't be the first person to confuse Boutique Le Trou for an art gallery. With a prerequisite West Queen West location and gnarly, massive antlers covering the back wall (an installation piece, actually), it could easily be a conceptual take on avant-garde Canadiana - and in a way it is. After talking about it since their teens, cousins Luigi and Carmen Carrubba realized their dream when they opened Boutique Le Trou this past year. Not just hawking any old imported high end, this retail space lives up to its mandate of only showcasing Canadian ready-to-wear lines that take a fresh approach to fashion.
No surprise that the selection is better than awesome - Luigi is one of Canada's most experienced stylists, currently reigning as fashion editor at Wish.
Supporting Canadian fashion is up to you, dear consumer. So do make a point of checking out Le Trou - even if it takes you a few walk-bys to recognize it. Just look for the antlers. Carrubba's picks : Bow blouse, $485, raw-edged skirt, $525, and wool military jacket, $895, all by Dean Hutchinson; Bow blouse, $485, raw-edged skirt, $525, both by Dean Hutchinson, with orange necklace by Morales, $275; Clean eau de parfum by Randi Shinder, $110; turquoise necklace by Morales, $295, with white rabbit collar from Layer by Jennifer Dares, $95; shawl-collar kimono jacket by Lysistrata, $375.
