Collective agreement

Organized by members of the Youth Business Centre (www.yes.on.ca), tonight’s (Thursday, August 4) Collective Independence Party at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen West) is a free opportunity to hang with some of Toronto’s freshest thinkers. The event kicks off with Mingle, Sample ‘n’ Sniff at 8 pm, with yummies from Organic Abundance and Powerfoods and natural beauty product samples by Ella Botanicals. Then at 10 pm, ooh and ah your way through the interactive fashion show featuring a stellar roster of local indie designers including B-love, Nathalie-Roze Fischer and Passenger Pigeon. After the show: bands, comedy, DJs and dancing. 416-899-7062.

Art + fashion = charity

Feeling charitable? Here’s your chance to have fun (and score a wicked shirt) while helping T-shirt company Ideal Apparel raise money for the Sick Kids Foundation during tonight’s (Thursday, August 4, 8 pm) The Artist’s Ideal exhibit and silent auction at Gypsy Co-op (815 Queen West, 416-703-5069). The company has enlisted 18 artists to “do whatever they want” to an Ideal T-shirt. 416-640-0375.

Closet raid

Attention, vintage shoppers: for an intimate and interactive approach to acquiring those one-of-a-kind clothing thrills, check out Melanie’s Closet (146 Brock, unit 302). Only open Fridays and Saturdays noon to 6 pm and Sundays by appointment, this private shopping experience takes place in the studio loft of stylist/supplier Melanie Janisse. It’s one you won’t want to miss. She’ll even make you a cuppa tea while you peruse her massive collection of vintage clothing, jewellery, accessories and used designer couture. 416-532-4231.

Hot Cock

You can put your pants back on. (This isn’t the back of the magazine.) I’m talking about Cock Party , a line of supercool silkscreened T-shirts (with a rooster motif, naturally) designed by a sweet trio of female designers, Jayme Keith, Julia Deakin and Angela Holmes. After last week’s hugely successful Toronto launch at the Social (capacity at 11 pm, crowded to the max, sold all their merch), don’t be surprised if you see a lot more cock around town. Get yours at www.cockpartyclothing.com.
