Lock on, sister

Educate yourself about a natural approach to hair care at the Toronto Natural Hair & Beauty Show (TNHBS) on Sunday (August 21) at the Conference Centre at Centennial College (940 Progress).

Formerly the Toronto Nappy Hair Fair, this community-oriented grassroots event brings together hair experts, braiders, stylists, lockticians and hair salon owners and black businesses that sell natural hair products, Afro-centric clothes, textiles, jewellery, accessories and much more. Activities this year include six workshops on natural hair, a hair show, free makeovers and a marketplace with more than 25 vendors. $20, advance $15. 416-937-3701, www.tcbwonline.com/TNHBS/

T for you

Tired of everyone (hopefully you not included) sporting the same ol’ tired printed T-shirts (read Che Guevara)? If you want a graphic all to yourself, hit www.papermoose. com, where local designer Monica Reyes will work with you to get the look – and the size (her Ts go up to 2XL) – you crave. Pick the graphic, the colour, the cut and – voila – now you really are wearing your expectations on your sleeve. Reyes also offers the chance to design your own silk-screened graphic, providing a way less messy mini-screen for you to use. 416-277-1591.
