Golden shower power

Rating: NNNNN

Lately I’ve been wondering about people who like to pee on each other – something that doesn’t even enter the periphery of my sexual fantasies.

It seems strange and icky, kind of like the way my superlesbian friend Amanda feels about the idea of sex with guys. She can’t imagine why any woman would do such a disgusting thing.

She saw her first penis in her mid-20s, and I had to hear about how gross it was for 20 minutes.

I feel the same way about pee, even if I did drink my own for a column last year.

I know I’m not alone, but there are plenty of people out there who enjoy splashing around in and/or drinking someone else’s urine.

Turns out it’s pretty popular, and guess what? It’s also one of the safer sexual practices one can indulge in. Who’da thunk?

Remember, we’re talking about urine here, not excrement, which is a whole other and far more dangerous ball game.

Still, it’s not totally risk free. Nothing ever is.

What the experts say

“For some it works as a fetish, while for others it’s a sign of intimacy, something to share and connect you to the other person. It takes a lot of trust to let somebody urinate on you, whether you swallow it or it just hits your body. Those with more of a fetish might go to a dominatrix and pay to get peed on. It’s more a compulsion in those cases. Sometimes it’s used as a power play, to humiliate and be humiliated. Whoever pees should probably drink a lot of water beforehand so the urine is not very strong. The more diluted, the cleaner and more pleasant it is. You don’t want to drink a lot of coffee or alcohol . ”

MARTA HELLIESEN , sex therapist, New York City

“You’re not likely to find too many bacteria in there unless there’s a urethral infection. Any real concerns are viral. There could be trace amounts of HIV, but in a healthy person urine is relatively safe. I don’t believe that anybody has caught HIV [from urine sex play]. If you’ve got an open sore or abrasion on the skin, this can be an entrance for a virus. By getting it in the eyes or mouth you will increase your risk significantly. Mid-stream urine, it can argued, is sterile provided there are no infections. Fresh, so to speak, urine is low-risk, but historically people wouldn’t have known that, so this played a role in viewing it as naughty or nasty. Don’t go scrubbing yourself before playing, but soap and water are a good thing .”

TREVOR JACQUES , safer sex educator, Toronto

“For the sensualist, external water sports (WS) play is warm and slippery, and there is something primal about it – baptism by a buddy. One can absorb the essence of another person into his body without taking a big risk, compared to receiving cum. For some, urine is inherently erotic. For others, watching it emanate from a big cock is. Some guys pop instant wood when they see a pissing cock. Creative people tend to get into WS as they get a bit older and a decade or two of the “same old in and out” becomes monotonous. As for health risks, drugs that are not metabolized in the liver, like crystal meth, can be passed if urine is ingested. Hepatitis A can also be passed.”

“If you’re talking about drinking undiluted urine, [someone else’s], which is a very strange thing to do, it is conceivable that you could get a drug effect [if the person has ingested one]. It would depend on what fraction of a particular drug was excreted unchanged, as opposed to being metabolized so that the end product was no longer active. A few drugs are excreted either partly unchanged or entirely unchanged, like the amphetamines and their derivatives, so it would be possible to get an effect from drinking urine containing such drugs.”
