Nearly 40,000 Scarborough residents may now be able to access primary care after the Ontario government invested $15 million into expanding access.
In a news release on Wednesday, the province announced they aim to connect around 38,000 residents in the east-end district to a family doctor.
This move is part of the provincial government’s $3.4 billion Primary Care Action plan, which aims to have every person in the province have access to primary care by 2029.
The investment will go toward four different care teams across Scarborough, following the province’s 2025 to 2026 call for proposals.
These locations are expected to share the $15 million investment: TAIBU Community Health Centre, Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, Scarborough Academic Family Health Team, HF Connecting Health Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic.
Scarborough health network improvements
Previously, the government provided an additional $4.8 million to two other primary care teams, Carefirst Family Health Team and Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, whose clinics are also located in Scarborough.
With this funding, those two clinics have already pushed toward the province’s 2029 goal, with another 13,600 people gaining access to primary care.
The government reported this number exceeded their original goal for the investment by 33 per cent.
Ontario continues to improve access to healthcare in Scarborough, as work on the new emergency department at Centenary Hospital also began with a provincial investment of more than $82 million.
The upcoming emergency department is said to be more than 36,000 square feet larger than the hospital’s current emergency department, while also creating around 400 new jobs in the industry.
Ontario says that with its funding, the government has added more than 20,000 physicians to the health-care system since 2018, with 14 per cent of those employees being family doctors.
Funding across the province
The latest round of funding pushes to expand around 75 primary care teams, connecting 500,000 more people to primary care.
Teams selected through the 2026–27 call for proposals have already begun to receive funding, which started in spring 2026.
