Here are the most expensive cities to buy cappuccinos in Canada. Hint: Toronto didn’t make the top 5

If you’re a coffee lover, then here’s a fun fact: today is National Cappuccino Day! And if you live in Toronto, you already know how expensive coffee here is. 

The Italian coffee drink is loved for its espresso, hot milk and steamed milk foam on top. To mark the occasion, OntarioBets.com took a dive into Google Trends and Numbeo data to discover which Canadian cities are home to the most expensive cappuccinos and it’s not surprising where Toronto landed amongst the list. 

Numbeo looked into the average prices for a regular-sized coffee in cities across the country. Meanwhile, Google Trends found which coffee types have been the most popular over the last year.

As a result, the data found that Ottawa holds the number one spot for having the most expensive cappuccino with an average price of $5.62. This was followed by Vancouver in second place with the same price, and Victoria in third at $5.59.

If you’re wondering where Toronto is sitting in the rankings, it actually was named number 11 for most expensive cappuccinos with an average price of $5.03. 

Here is a list of the top 20 Canadian cities where the average price of a cappuccino is highest:

1. Ottawa, Ontario: $5.62, Vancouver, British Columbia: $5.62 (tied for first)

  3. Victoria, British Columbia: $5.59

4. Surrey, British Columbia: $5.58

5. Calgary, Alberta: $5.47

6. Quebec City, Quebec: $5.43

7. Windsor, Ontario: $5.29

8. Kelowna, British Columbia: $5.25

9. Edmonton, Alberta: $5.06, Nanaimo, British Columbia: $5.06 (tied for ninth)

11. Toronto, Ontario: $5.03

12. Kingston, Ontario: $5.00

13. Montreal, Quebec: $4.93

14. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan: $4.83

15. Halifax, Nova Scotia: $4.81

16. London, Ontario: $4.79, Winnipeg, Manitoba: $4.79 (tied for sixteenth)

18. Hamilton, Ontario: $4.69

19. Burnaby, British Columbia: $4.57, Mississauga, Ontario: $4.56 

In terms of where cappuccinos rank in popularity compared to other coffee types, it was ranked at the bottom in Ontario, according to Google Trends data over the last year. The percentage beside each coffee type indicates the amount of Google searches they received.

  1. Latte (36 per cent)
  2. Iced Coffee (24 per cent)
  3. Espresso (21 per cent)
  4. Mocha (ten per cent)
  5. Cappuccino (nine per cent)
