Hollywood Canteen

1516 Danforth, 416-461-1704, www.hcanteen.com Rating: NNNNN

Although owner (and high school teacher by day) Michael Orlando claims it’s a “hobby gone wrong,” he must be doing something right with his Danforth cinema shop. He’s positioned himself as one of the North America’s top sources for classic movies, vintage film posters, out-of-print cinema books and everything from boxed figurines to original actors’ headshots and retro movie postcards. The Toronto International Film Festival is prime ka-ching season at Hollywood Canteen . Orlando’s providing high-end items for Saturday’s (September 10, 1 pm) Movie Poster Auction: Art, Fiction & Fantasy at Ritchies (288 King West, 416-364-0704, www.ritchies.com) sponsoring an autograph signing with Priscilla Barnes (Three’s Company, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects) at the Show Of Shows’ Movie & TV Collectibles Extravaganza on Sunday (September 11) at the Days Hotel (30 Carlton) and opening the Hollywood Canteen Gallery (323 Queen East) on October 1, which features hard-to-find cinema posters and original art. Some hobby, huh?

Orlando’s picks : The book The Films Of Clint Eastwood, from Citadel’s Films Of series, $19.95 a set of eight rare original lobby cards for the cult film Blade Runner, $400 VHS and DVD rentals organized by star, director and genre, heavy on classic Hollywood stars, $3 for three nights or $4 for a week.

Look for : “Hurt” cinema books, five for $20 and weekly foreign and classic video/DVD rentals, three for $10.

Store hours : Monday to Thursday 11 am to 7 pm, Friday 11 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm.
