Movable feast

Rating: NNNNN

Before summer slips away, get outside and enjoy it. Hit the Dream in High Park for some al fresco dinner theatre or drive out of town for a day in the country. Whatever you choose, these four-piece picnic sets won’t disappoint.

Perfect for snacking on the green, this golf-themed, very retro picnic set is great for, well, golf fans, but also for people who can’t stand eating and drinking from plastic. The high-end ensemble comes with porcelain cups and plates, heavyweight cutlery, cotton napkins and Arcoroc glasses nestled in a rectangular wicker basket. Also included are a thermos, two food containers, salt and pepper shakers and a corkscrew. The quality materials definitely add weight to this set, but who cares? That’s what golf carts are for. Also available are picnic sets for dogs, cats and babies ( Teatro Verde , 87 Avenue Road, 416-966-2227, $425). Chill out with this plastic ice bucket ( Tap Phong Trading Co. , 360 Spadina, 416-977-6364, $2.69). Lay out on this PC Summer Linen tablecloth ( Loblaws, $29.99.)

For outdoorsy types who need to keep their hands free to punch out a bear, rock climb or whatnot a backpack picnic set is clearly the way to go. This navy blue cutie comes with plastic stemware, flatware and tableware (translation: glasses, cutlery and plates), salt and pepper shakers, cutting knife and cutting board. It has insulated pockets to keep food and drink at the right temperature. The detachable wine coolers at the sides make for the ultimate “travellers.” ( Moss , 544 Danforth, 416-462-9898, and others, $90).

Attention undercover picnickers! This satchel looks like it’s stuffed with books and important papers but it’s actually crammed full of outdoor eating equipment. The set includes melamine plates, plastic glasses, corkscrew, knife, cutting board, cloth napkins, salt and pepper shakers and large insulated compartments for food and wine ( Dexterity , 773 Queen West, 416-703-6185, $140).

For a less-is-more approach to al fresco eating, this blue wicker picnic basket comes with plates, forks, spoons, knives and cups all in plastic for ease of movement. We love the happy floral-print interior ( Zellers , Gerrard Square, 1000 Gerrard East, 416-466-2103, and others, $15). Hold your icy or hot beverages in this sunny yellow thermos. The side handle helps make your pouring experiences spill-free ( Latitude for Living , 2084 Queen East, 416-690-2084, $29).
