Committing to a sport, with all its equipment and fees, can be expensive. It’s harsh on the bank account and even worse on the ol’ ego when you abandon your gear a few months in – and are reminded of your failure every time you trip over it.

Here’s the beauty of Play It Again Sports, a North American franchise: you can start by renting or buying used, then trade up for new, consign it and start all over again. PIAS has every angle – and every sport – covered. There’s loads of kids’ equipment. Plus, if you’re only picking up a game here or there, buying equipment that’s already been broken in can result in better plays. Which equals increased confidence, resulting in sticking to it.

PIAS’s picks: K2 Fat Box snowboard with bindings, $249 children’s 852 CCM Supertracks regularly priced at $399 but yours for only $89.

Look for: new elliptical trainers and ski/binding combos and in the summer, worked-in baseball mitts, lacrosse sticks and soccer cleats.

Hours: Monday to Friday 10 am to 9 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday noon to 6 pm.
