When it comes to retail, the same ol' can get really tired for shoppers and retailers alike. Looking to add a fresh dimension to the concept of consumption, Scott Ciniello launched Public in May 2003. Equal parts art gallery, fashion boutique and design workshop, the building, with its killer Victorian facade, works well to facilitate all three.
No stranger to retail, Ciniello, one of the three original designers of pioneering Canadian streetwear label Geek Boutique, had a hunch that subtle merchandising, careful product placement and a sophisticated environment (hello, art gallery) would get the money in the store and into the cash register.
And, man, was he right. Now, not only is Public expanding in terms of square footage, but it has also successfully launched a new in-house line that hits the racks this fall.
Public's Picks : Collette dress by Geek Boutique, $156; Stacks T-shirt from $37; skull trucker hat by Outdoor Terrier, $24; and Parisian-made Brontibay Bag wallets starting at $52.
Look for: Scandinavian menswear lines including Melka shirts and Dunderdon workwear; womenswear by Montreal designer Eve Gravel; the Contact showing of Adam Krawesky's photography (www.inconduit.com) in May; and the new in-house-designed Public line of womenswear coming this fall.
Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday noon to 7 pm, Friday noon to 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday noon to 6 pm, closed Tuesday.
