Rock out

There’s nothing like a sweaty rock ‘n’ roll show to beat the winter blahs, starting tonight (Thursday, January 22) with a dynamite bill at the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina) led by slouchy NYC roughnecks the Izzys, with Action Makes, Easy Targets and Nature Move Faster adding local colour.

And don’t go too far, because T.O. blues rock bruisers Catl threaten a Friday-?night (January 23) frenzy at the Dollar for their CD release party, with the always entertaining $100 and the Speaking Tongues heating things up.

Those seeking a more metalloid method of blasting away the blahs should check out Sweden’s mighty Meshuggah with Cynic at the Phoenix (410 Sherbourne) February 17. If you have any hearing left, J. Mascis leads his Sabbath-?happy Witch crew into an amp-?melting battle of the stoner droners with Earthless at the Horseshoe (370 Queen West) February 20. Stand back – this one might hurt.

Bobby Gillespie and his down-?but-?not-?out Primal Scream make their triumphant return to the Phoenix (410 Sherbourne) March 24 to prove Beautiful Future’s songs were better than anyone thought – though the bad boys of Brit rock won’t have Josh Homme, Lovefoxxx or Linda Thompson on hand to help put them across.

And you may want to catch Christian-singer-turned-pop-tart Katy Perry belting out her Matrix-?madeover tunes at the Kool Haus (132 Queens Quay East) March 30. She may be gone as suddenly as she appeared.
