As with all things retro, the huge shades of yesteryear are hogging the mike on the international fashion stage. We suggest you listen up and score some of these Yoko-ish shades pronto - that is, if you haven't already. But before you fall victim to this killer fashion eyewear, know this: Since many shield and/or wraparound sunglasses do not have a proper frame around them, the bulk of the stress is on the lens itself, resulting in a way-shortened lifespan. Next, most shades do not use ophthalmic-quality lenses, so distortion can impede your vision. Also, they cannot be made into reading glasses. If the aforementioned are non-issues - good. Spend a little or a lot, but ride this look maintenant !

For the jock within, these Adidas shields in "flash orange" do the trick and also feature a reinforced bridge to prevent breakage ( Rapp Optical , 788 College, 416-537-6590, $170). Not exactly the darkest lens, but the shape is cool, with a mirrored lens set on a reverse-mounted frame (from Eddie , a street vendor at Bay and Bloor, $10). Lindberg's 8510 model features extra-durable titanium frames and high-tech, mirrored anti-reflective lenses ( Josephson Opticians , 60 Bloor West, 416-964-7070, and others, $345). For a higher-end look, Dior's "Punk" shields pair a little bit of anarchist with a whole lot of label whore ( Crown Opticians , 758 Yonge, 416-924-4384, $299).

For a more practical version, these shields from Line 3 rest within a sturdy plastic frame and feature a dark-tinted lens (Rapp Optical, $360). Not unlike chrome rims on a sweet car, the silver detailing on these glasses provides the finishing touch ( In Style , 5130 Yonge, 416-322-8336, $20). For super-sized coverage, these shades provide maximum face concealment (In Style, $40). We love the sharp silhouette on these brown beauties from Mercury Accessories ( Te Koop , 421 Queen West, 416-348-9485, $20).

If an 80s aesthetic is what you're after, these black shields with an exterior-mounted frame won't disappoint (In Style, $30). These shields from Diesel come with sliced lenses, which I'm guessing are there to help you keep a cool head while looking so damn hot (the Show Room , 278 Queen West, 416-977-1360, $240). Give Dame Edna a run for her money in these bejewelled eye covers (In Style, $40). A subtle green lens with not-so-subtle silver detail makes these shields from Mercury a fresh variation on the theme ( Red Pegasus , 628 College, 416-536-3872, $20).
