Shorts Story

Rating: NNNNN

Streamlined and conservative in the front, sequined flap pockets in the back: these stretch-cotton day shorts by Ottawa-based Rosa Costanzo ($140, Skirt , 903 Dundas West, 647-436-3357, www.skirtclothing.ca) could seriously be considered the mullet of short pants.

Now that Jessica Simpson is Daisy Duke incarnate, you pretty well bet that shorts short in the thigh, such as these Chip & Pepper denims ($198, Over the Rainbow , 101 Yorkville, 416-967-7448) are the trendy thing to buy. No offence, but this style isn’t for every body. Two words: camel toe. Beware.

Dress ’em up, dress ’em down – these white cotton chinos ($44, American Eagle Outfitters , 220 Yonge, 416-204-9557) are the perfect neutral base to build your jazzy hot weather outfits on. Rolled-up and belted, these patterned numbers by Development ($242, Delphic , 706 Queen West, 416-603-3334) rock with the retro good looks that runway-ogling fashionistas love.

All-terrain in the separates department, these nylon Paverider cargo manpris ($39, Mountain Equipment Co-op , 400 King West, 416-340-2667, www.mec.ca) are tough enough for rock climbing, cool enough for urban living.
