Store Spotlight: IZ

Local designer Izzy Camilleri changed the fashion game with her line IZ. Not just another vehicle to move witty printed tees and cocktail dresses, IZ is for people with disabilities– specifically those who use wheelchairs.

Camilleri believes wheelchair users should be able to enjoy the same trends as the rest of us without having to give up function or comfort. Unfortunately, many must choose between style and practicality because clothes fit a seated body shape differently.

To accommodate clients, IZ uses discreet design details like wraparound waists, easy zip-back styles and no rear pockets or rivets on jeans to make them fit and wear better.

Now IZ steps up its game with a brand new e-commerce site (izcollection.com) and the launch of Access10, IZ’s initiative to donate 10 per cent of total gross sales toward projects that help increase accessibility. Over 60 per cent of Ontario businesses aren’t in compliance with the Accessibility For Ontarians With Disabilities Act. One of the primary organizations IZ works with is StopGap, which builds brightly coloured ramps for North American businesses.

How can you help? As part of the campaign, Camilleri designed prewashed, unisex Fashion IZ Freedom Ts suitable for people of all abilities. Available online for $29 U.S. each, and 100 per cent of profits go toward Access10 initiatives.

Camilleri encourages shoppers to spread the message by taking seated selfies in the Ts and posting on social media with the hashtags #Acess10 and #FashionIZFreedom
