What I Want: Todd Falkowsky

Todd Falkowsky, Head of the Interior Design Show

1. Best gift ever received?

This is easy. When I was studying overseas, it was really lonely and I missed my friends and family a ton. I lived in a small room with a handful of students, and at 12:05 am, just as my birthday was starting, there was a knock on my bedroom door and in came four of my best friends. They had made the trip over to spend a week in Holland with me. It was a total surprise and it came at the perfect time – proof that a thoughtful gift is genuine and better than anything Hallmark could design.

2. Best gift ever given?

I always give experiences over objects (like a spa day or dinner). The best gift I have ever given was to my dad on his 70th. His little prairie hometown was going through a much-needed Main Street renovation, and I purchased a street bench in his name to help out the restoration. This gave the whole family a reason to go back to the town for the occasion. I’d never been there before, so it was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect to a part of [our family’s] past.

3. What’s on your wish list?

I am pretty tough to buy for. I don’t like trinkets or cluttering up my house, and I don’t need anything. My wish list is always short and unromantic: donations to my favourite charity (SPCA), anything from Lacoste, gym membership and magazine/newspaper subscription renewals and a lottery ticket. This year I could go for a Syrup Duvet by Scholten & Baijings for Hay.
