Lately, women’s basketball has been nothing to play with, thanks to fan base momentum, record viewership and hard working women, both on and off the court.
That’s why it comes to no surprise that the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is giving female entrepreneurs the opportunity to put their head in the game and score big as Canada gears up to host its second-ever professional basketball league pre-season game in Edmonton on May, 5.
The WNBA and American Express Canada have officially released the 2024 WNBA Goods presented by Amex which will be in collaboration with nine Canadian women business owners across the country and will feature a selection of WNBA-themed merchandise and products for purchase.
This year’s line up includes WNBA-inspired floral bouquets, handbags constructed from jerseys and basketballs, creatively designed greeting cards and unique streetwear for your everyday.
Additionally, 2023’s initiative, which launched ahead of the first WNBA game in Canada last year, collectively sold more than 90 per cent of their WNBA merchandise offerings.
In fact, the first WNBA game in Canada, which was held on May 13, 2023, in Toronto, set records for attendance and viewership and merchandise sales.
“We are thrilled to once again spotlight an incredible group of Canadian entrepreneurs and their products ahead of what promises to be another amazing WNBA Canada Game in Edmonton next month,” WNBA Commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, said in a press release.
“Coming off of last year’s historic game in Toronto, there is incredible momentum around women’s basketball in Canada, and thanks to the hard work of these women and their companies, as well as the support of American Express, these products will allow fans across the country to showcase their passion for the WNBA in creative ways.”
The nine women-owned Canadian businesses and their products that are part of this year’s program are Callia Flowers, Crave Cupcakes, Justine Ma, Makeway, Mallory Tolcher, Scents by Fay, Small Town Boys, STUDIO S and The Give & Grow.
