Long before cannabis was legalized in Canada, getting high and parking yourself on the couch in front of a trippy Werner Herzog film or a prestige nature series like Planet Earth was a favourite stoner pastime.
So it’s hardly a surprise that Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema is catering to cannabis enthusiasts’ craving for mind-blowing movies with a new documentary screening series called High Minded.
Launching on April 9 with Ron Fricke’s 2011 non-verbal travelogue film Samsara, the semi-regular series is aimed at “audience members of all (legal) ages to come see some of the most psychedelic, visually profound documentary cinema on our big screen,” according to a Hot Docs rep. “These aren’t your typical midnight stoner films that hearken back to the old days of the Bloor Cinema, but rather the most mind-expanding true-life cinema we could find.”
No smoking is permitted in the theatre but there is, of course, a snack bar.
