Hot Summer Guide: August’s Best Movies

Suicide Squad

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice may have made $870 million earlier this year, but good luck finding people who enjoyed it – which makes the next feature in the DC Cinematic Universe even more of an underdog than it might otherwise have been. The stories of Joker Jared Leto dicking around with his co-stars during last year’s Suicide Squad shoot in Toronto were bad enough. But we remain hopeful that the film – which casts Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman and others as villains forced to be heroes by a covert agency trying to stop a bigger threat – will capture something of the cult comic’s chaotic energy. If nothing else, we already know it’s got a truly detestable Joker. Opens August 5.

NOW Free Flick Mondays: The Dark Knight

If all the Suicide Squad coverage has you in the mood to see an earlier incarnation of Batman’s greatest adversary, NOW has you covered with a screening of Christopher Nolan‘s 2008 Bat masterpiece at the monthly Free Flick At The Royal. Will Heath Ledger‘s performance still be the definitive interpretation of the Joker by then? Probably. So pay special attention to Aaron Eckhart‘s layered work as doomed district attorney Harvey Dent. August 8.

Kubo And The Two Strings

After Coraline, ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls, the latest from upstart stop-motion shop Laika is an Asian-flavoured adventure about a young villager (voiced by Game Of Thrones actor Art Parkinson) who sets off on a quest for a mystical suit of armour. The trailer’s been bouncing around for months, but we’re really looking forward to seeing the whole thing – and hearing how the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, George Takei and Rooney Mara fit into Laika’s latest fantasy. August 19.
