What to watch on Amazon Prime Video Canada in April 2021

Here’s everything new that’s coming Amazon Prime Video Canada in April 2021.

Made For Love

Cristin Milioti stars in this adaptation of Alissa Nutting’s 2017 novel about a woman who leaves her controlling husband (Tell Me A Story’s Billy Magnussen), only to discover he’s implanted a chip in her brain that lets him monitor her movements – and her emotions – no matter where she goes. The series is being positioned as a comedy (specifically, a “darkly absurd and cynically poignant” one), and Milioti’s been carving out a niche for herself as the resourceful hero of unlikely sci-fi parables with projects like Black Mirror and Palm Springs. We are mighty curious to see how this goes. April 16

Stowaway

Director Joe Penna and editor Ryan Morrison made a splash with their Mads Mikkelsen survival drama Arctic; now, they’re bringing their knack for tense, terse storytelling into space. Scarborough’s own Shamier Anderson – whom you may have seen in Wynonna Earp and Destroyer – stars as a NASA launch support engineer who’s accidentally included on a Mars mission that’ll take two years to complete; Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim and Toni Collette are the astronauts who weren’t expecting a fourth crew member. And no, that’s not the only twist Penna and Morrison have up their sleeves. April 22

Them

This eagerly awaited horror series from executive producer Lena Waithe and writer/producer Little Marvin will spin a different narrative every season, much like Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story. But the title of Murphy’s show might better apply to Them, which aims to infuse genuine racial tensions with supernatural stings. Set in 1953, this season – unofficially known as Covenant – tracks 10 days in the lives of the Emorys, a Black family newly arrived in all-white Compton in 1953. Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde play the leads; Alison Pill is the neighbour across the way, intent on driving them out by any means necessary. And that’s before things start to go bump in the night. April 9

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse

The success of Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series proved there’s still an audience for big, burly spy thrillers, especially if they’re built around beloved characters from a late author’s books. (Come to think of it, I guess the Bourne movies proved it first.) Originally slated for a theatrical release, Without Remorse was intended to launch a new franchise for Michael B. Jordan, who produces and stars as Clancy’s hard-boiled CIA operative John Clark – a role previously played by Willem Dafoe in Clear And Present Danger and by Liev Schreiber in The Sum Of All Fears. This project aims to reboot Clark for the present day, taking him back to his origins as a Navy SEAL whose personal mission of revenge leads him into a wider world of espionage and betrayal. Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith and Guy Pearce co-star; our only concern is that Jordan’s charismatic screen presence might work against Clark’s whole undercover thing, but maybe they gave him a hat or something.
