Our picks for the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+ Canada in February 2022.
Pam & Tommy
This Hulu series – produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie – looks back at the fallout from the 1997 leak of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s sex tape, one of the first moments when the internet brought the world together. (Ask your parents.) Baby Driver’s Lily James and Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Sebastian Stan play the leads; Rogen is the disgruntled contractor who snatched the tape; Nick Offerman plays the Hollywood porn actor who distributed it to the masses; and Jason Mantzoukas provides the voice of Tommy Lee’s penis. So yeah, this might not be a conventional docudrama. New episodes Wednesdays from February 2
Torn
National Geographic Pictures’ latest documentary is a very personal work, as director Max Lowe tells the story of his father Alex, an expert mountain climber who died – along with cameraman David Bridges – in an avalanche in Tibet in 1999. Alex’s climbing partner Conrad Anker survived, eventually marrying Alex’s widow Jennifer and raising their three sons. Using home videos, archival footage of his father’s climbs and interviews with his own mother, stepfather and siblings, Max tries to understand his father, his family… and ultimately himself. February 4
The King’s Man
Are you among the Kingsman fans who didn’t get to experience Matthew Vaughn’s prequel in theatres during its truncated holiday release? Well, consider this a late Christmas present: the movie drops on Disney+’s more mature Star tier just two months later, so you can watch Ralph Fiennes maintain a stiff upper lip while slashing his way through an assortment of early 20th century villains, including Rhys Ifans’s frothing Rasputin. Full disclosure: I despised it. But horses for courses, and all that. February 18
The Proud Family: Louder And Prouder
Producer Bruce W. Smith revives his beloved Disney Channel animated series – which ran from 2001 to 2005, and starred Kyla Pratt as 14-year-old Penny Proud, a good-hearted kid in a frenzied world. Pratt returns, along with most of the original voice cast (including Paula Jai Parker, Tommy Davidson and Soleil Moon Frye) with Keke Palmer, Zachary Quinto, Cedric the Entertainer and Billy Porter among the actors voicing new characters. (That’s Palmer’s Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins with Penny, above.) New episodes Wednesdays from February 23
No Exit
This adaptation of Taylor Adams’s 2017 novel stars The Chair’s Havana Rose Liu – who’ll also be seen this month in Apple’s The Sky Is Everywhere – as a college student snowed in at a mountain rest stop with a few other travellers… one of whom, she discovers, is holding a child captive in their car. Danny Ramirez, Dennis Haysbert and Dale Dickey are among the suspicious strangers; Damien Power directs. This was originally scheduled for theatrical release through 20th Century Pictures, but you know how everything’s been going. February 25
