People Hold On

PEOPLE HOLD ON 98 minutes. See Movies. Rating: NNN

People Hold On is one of those movies where a bunch of friends get together at a cottage for a weekend and wind up rehashing old beefs and reheating old attractions.

Here, the reunion is to celebrate an impending wedding, but really it’s a showcase for its talented young cast, which consists of Paula Brancati, Mazin Elsadig, Jonathan Malen, Chloe Rose, Ashley Leggat, Noah Reid, Al Mukadam and Katie Boland.

Nothing that unfolds will come as a surprise – the stakes are never all that high in these movies – but actor-turned-director Michael Seater (who co-wrote the script with Brancati) gives his actors room to develop their characters and find interesting angles on stock types, even if he does lay the soundtrack on a little thick.

There’s a stylistic gambit at the end that doesn’t work at all, but right up until that point People Hold On is a fine little picture. Count me in for Seater’s next one.
