John Bul Dau, Panther Bior and Daniel Abul Pach are refugees from Sudan’s brutal wars. By astounding good fortune they wind up in the U.S., where Quinn’s documentary follows them as they confront the weirdness of America: supermarkets, suburbs and “only one wife.”
Expertly crafted, this documentary follows all the rules of storytelling. It has compelling characters and dramatic contrasts between them. It also has Nicole Kidman doing the narration and Brad Pitt on board as executive producer.
What it doesn’t have is anything to do with Africa. Pitched as an inspiring story of transformation but designed as a high-concept fish-out-of-water doc, it trades in superficial insights and quick-drying tears. (At the Bloor, April 6 to 12).
