Calling all crime-show lovers!

There’s a new spinoff in the works in Toronto brought to you by an iconic franchise that needs little introduction: Law & Order.

Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent is coming to Canada in the spring of 2024, exclusively on CityTV who made the announcement on Monday.

The series will follow an elite squad of detectives who investigate high-profile crime and corruption in the metro system.

The news series could be reminiscent of 2019’s Coroner where a newly appointed coroner investigates a string of mysterious deaths in Toronto.

Since the announcement, there’s been mixed reaction online with some intrigued by the idea, while others poked fun at it.

“I can’t wait for the episode where they chase a guy down for eating a Shawarma while talking on his cellphone on the Gardiner Expressway,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Wouldn’t the Toronto version just be the cops catching the exact same criminals every week? Or would it be trying to make our justice system look like less of a joke?” another said.

Some people even brought mayoral candidate and former police chief Mark Saunders into the conversation by pointing to the case of Bruce McArthur, one of Canada’s most prolific serial killers who took the lives of eight men in Toronto.

“Plot suggestion: there is a serial killer in the gay village and the police chief isn’t concerned. Sequel: the chief runs for mayor,” a Twitter user said.

“I can’t wait for the storyline where a Mayoral candidate, a former chief of Police, is revealed as THE villain and misleads the protagonists about serial killers and blames Queer folks for not trusting the police over decades of service,” another said.

One person even called for an episode covering the 2021 police crackdown on homeless encampments that led to protesters getting arrested.
