Women in Toronto’s punk scene put their passions in a calendar

What do firefighters, One Direction (RIP), herb gardens, Chuck Norris, The Great British Bake Off and puppies doing yoga have in common? They all have 2017 calendars ready to purchase and hang on your wall. But if none of those are your liking, how about a calendar of women in punk rock?

One of the many shows taking place across the city as part of Not Dead Yet is a release party for the 2017 Women In Punk Calendar. Conceived by Toronto-based punks Christina Pap and Marjie Francis, the project is a celebration of Toronto’s DIY punk scene, both the music and lifestyle. According to Pap, “This means not only playing in bands, but contributing artwork, making flyers, booking shows, working the door, taking photos of bands, writing zines, attending shows, hosting touring bands and more.”

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Pap is no stranger to a huge undertaking like this. She pulled it off back home in 2014 and raised $3,000 for three different independent women’s charities. When she moved to Toronto at the end of last year, she felt compelled to do the same for this city.

“When 2016 came around, I didn’t have another calendar filled with amazing women to look at every day. I knew that such strong individuals were out there and passionate about the same music and subculture I am,” Pap explains. “I thought it’d be cool to try it again in this new country, and I was very fortunate that Marjie was keen to help.”

Along with the calendar comes a zine that sheds more light on the women’s contributions to the scene. “The calendar allows the women to be seen the way they want to be seen,” says Pap, “and the zine enables you to learn more about their passion for their hobbies and lifestyle existing though punk.”

All profits will be donated to the local charity Community Action for Families. If you can’t make it to the show, buy one (calendar $20, zine $3) at womenintorontopunkcalendar.bigcartel.com or in person at Faith/Void (894A College).
