Feuermusik

Rating: NNNNN

Since 04, Toronto experimental jazz-ish duo Feuermusik (foy-er-music) have succeeded in maintaining an impressively unique vision and a sound light years removed from anything else they or their contemporaries have attempted. Made up of percussionist Gus Weinkauf (formerly of local post-punk visionaries Rockets Red Glare and hardcore legends Blake) and Jeremy Strachan (also of RRG, Sea Snakes, Hylozoists and others), the duo take a near-minimalist approach on Lucille that finds Weinkauf working with an assortment of plastic buckets and other found objects to hypnotic effect. The complex rhythmic patterns complement Strachan’s woodwind playing, which swerves erratically through Eastern, traditional and acid jazz influences, occasionally echoing both Mingus and Zorn. The result is an accomplished, challenging album that exhibits the range of the duo’s talent and scope.

Feurmusik play the Tranzac as part of the Bummer In The Summer festival Saturday (August 5).
