Rating: NNNN Unbeknownst to Pharrell Williams, Daryl Dragon of Captain & Tennille.
Unbeknownst to Pharrell Williams, Daryl Dragon of Captain & Tennille fame has two brothers, Dennis and Doug Dragon, who knocked out an album’s worth of dazzling experimental psych pop at Sunwest Recording back in late 1969 — and it was dope! Sadly, few people outside the Dragon family knew about Blue Forces Intelligence (BFI) until three decades later, when Strictly Kev heard the funky head-nodder Food For My Soul on a 70s surf film soundtrack.
Tracking down Dennis for permission to use it for a mix, he discovered there were 10 other bitchin’ Dragons tunes tweaked with clavinet, harpsichord, harp, Chamberlin and the Captain chiming in on vibes and pipe organ. The astonishing bit is that the inspired production and arrangements make BFI sound more exciting than any recent record by a contemporary orch-pop band.
