It’s funny how whining has become synonymous with singing in the new-fashioned pop landscape. Plaintive tones and long-suffering yowls have virtually unseated standards of vocal proficiency. Beneath Augusta – specifically singers Michael Brennan and Matthew Cromarty – are perpetrators of this particular style in all its moodily melodic intensity. But you can’t blame a band for following the sway of cultural taste and, as far as it goes, the local indie popsters know how to put across a good whine. Beneath Augusta hit the Rivoli Wednesday (October 20).
