Blue Fog sneak out another winner

If you haven’t heard about the new release from Toronto’s Wyrd Visions and Castlemusic, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise.

Blue Fog Recordings attitude towards album releases is subtle, to say the least.

Run by Brian Taylor (of Rotate This fame) and the iconic, mysterious Canadian rock legend Rick White, the label prides itself on barring any major label red tape, and associating itself only with acts they feel meet the Blue Fog standards. Perhaps from having seen the perils of the format-flipping record industry, the label keeps its focus on good old trusty vinyl.

This brings me back to why you may have not noticed this new record, a split 12″ by the two aforementioned artists, which features art-work by Wyrd Visions himself (aka Colin Bergh), who moonlights as a graphic designer – a style most recognizable from his other gig at Toronto’s Bad Day Magazine. Sneaking onto the record store shelves fresh out of the box and with little fanfare, the only visible marketing strategy for the record seems to be word-of-mouth and a reliance on the dreamy Smiths-evoking quality of the artwork.

Tonight (Wednesday), the two spooky folkies celebrate their record release at Double Double Land alongside Nifty: aka Matt Smith, a long-standing accomplice who recorded Bergh’s first full length, Half Eaten Guitar for Blue Fog in 2006, and also recorded these new tracks.
