ANDRE WILLIAMS AND THE STRAP at the Horseshoe (370 Queen West), Friday (March 30), 11 pm. $35/wristband, $10/door. 416-598-4753.
while it's true that andre wil-
liams has a few years on many of the parents of showcasing artists at Canadian Music Week, the godfather of raunch and roll still kicks more ass than any punk a third his age.
Having worn out New York's Speedball Baby while recording his forthcoming album for the Norton label -- boasting duets with Ronnie Spector and the great Rudy Ray Moore -- Williams will be tearing up clubs for the next two months before returning to the studio to cut yet another sleaze fest.
If the salacious genius behind contentious classics like Jailbait learned anything from cleaning up his act for his disappointing country detour, Red Dirt (Bloodshot), it's that dirty works best.
"We did a couple of legit songs that could be played on radio," says Williams from Los Angeles, "but there's gonna be more dirty stuff this time. I'm a dirty old man, and I get a kick out of writing nasty stuff like Leave Me The Panties That You Wore Last Night. Those are the kinds of songs I've always enjoyed singing, too. I don't know why -- I just do.
"My wife, being a devout Baptist, never would listen to my songs. Even now, my children won't listen to 'em either, but I need to have money for the rent at the first of every month, and those are the songs that pay my bills.
"I don't want to blow Norton's bag by playing too much of the new stuff in Toronto -- the album won't be out for a couple of months -- but I may give people a little taste. If I pull out something, heh heh, I'll make sure it's the dirtiest one!"
