The major theme in just-announced concerts of late? Classic-album anniversary tours.
Hot on the heels of performances by Our Lady Peace (revisiting 1997’s Clumsy and others), I Mother Earth (96’s Scenery And Fish), Sloan (One Chord To Another, also from 96) – and the Zombies’ upcoming reprise of 68’s Odessey & Oracle – among others, this week’s new-show list includes the Tea Party at the Danforth Music Hall March 3 and 4 performing 97’s Transmission, and Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem landing at the Phoenix on January 21 to perform 94 debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
But the most surprising return might just be The Damned, who play the Phoenix on April 30 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of classic debut single New Rose, which came out on Stiff Records in 1976. Singles rather than albums, it seems, are now another reason to reunite. And New Rose is certainly worthy, cited as one of the most influential punk songs of all time, slightly preceding the Sex Pistols’ releases in the first wave of UK punk rock.
The single is being re-released as a limited-edition 7-inch picture disc, and original members Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible, plus Monty Oxymoron, Pinch and Stu West, are also heading into the studio to make an album of new material, their first since 2008’s So, Who’s Paranoid?
