Modulok

Rating: NNN

Modulok isn’t quite as diverse as the He-Man villain of a thousand parts he’s named after, but he’s certainly a master of raw stream-of-consciousness lyrics full of abstract theories and ideas open to personal interpretation. Juxtaposing emotions, too, has become the Toronto rapper’s specialty since dropping the apocalyptic audio bomb Omega Point with Red Ants.

On Your Boyfriend’s A Cokehead, an exercise in cold catharsis, depressed saxophones are a logical but awkward addition to the minimalist percussion and low-end sub-harmonic buzz. Timewalker’s morose reflections offer poetic jewels, while Keep Moving features strong appearances by Apollo Creed and Abyss. And since when did Uncle Fester’s turntablism begin approaching the awesomeness of Skratch Bastid?
