whether nardwuar is shocking some unsuspecting music celeb during one of his nutty interviews or screaming his way through a punk rock jam while fronting the Evaporators, he's always driven by fannish enthusiasm. It's the fan in Nardwuar that's behind the many covers and tribute songs the Evaporators have recorded, and the current album is silly with them.
Just the mere mention of one of the bands being paid homage is usually enough to get Nardwuar nattering excitedly about the many strange coincidences and chance encounters that led to the recording in question. Like the Pointed Sticks, for example.
"We did a cover of an early Pointed Sticks song called I Quit School off a cassette tape given to me by my friend Grant at Zulu Records here in Vancouver," Nardwuar shouts. "It's a tape of a show the Pointed Sticks played with the Avengers at the Quadra Club, which later became the famous Starfish Room, but of course, that's been wrecked now for housing.
"But the really hilarious thing about I Quit School is that the Pointed Sticks' guitarist, Bill Napier-Hemy, is now a school teacher! How amazing is that?"
As it turns out, Nardwuar gets many of his song ideas from friends, fans and colleagues.
"Somebody e-mailed me saying, 'Hey, Nardwuar, I was sitting around the house, and I yelled out, "I've got icicles on my testicles!" I thought it would make a great title for an Evaporators tune.' He was right! That night, I wrote a song to go with the title.
"I'm always open to people's ideas about what I should be doing... well, except the ones who tell me to fuck off and die."
