The windfall of a local show by Sharon Jones is that her Dap Kings bassist, Gabriel Roth , brings his latest Daptone label releases to the gig. This time around it was Joseph Henry's funk-up of Eddie Floyd's I've Never Found A Girl, but the flip side's the business here: the Mighty Imperials ' unhinged guitar-stoked scorcher The Matador. Watch for Daptone's release of a "lost" Mighty Imperials session on the way.
Kites Are Fun!
Reissues of the Free Design 's outrageously sunny pop records - understandably worshipped by Beck , Stereolab , Cornelius , Belle & Sebastian , etc - have seen limited release in Japan, but thanks to Seattle's Light in the Attic label (www.lightintheattic.net), the Dedrick family's classic Kites Are Fun and Heaven/Earth albums are now available here in lush 24-bit remastered versions packed with bonus tracks. They've got more Free Design albums on the way, along with remix EPs with manipulations by fans like Madlib , Peanut Butter Wolf and the Sharpshooters . How lovely.
Scando-licious get down
Improbable as it may seem, the recent collabo between Motorpsycho and their Norwegian countrymen of Jaga Jazzist lives up to the high standards of Dutch label Konkurrent 's In The Fishtank series set by the Tortoise showdown with the Ex , and Low 's hoedown with the Dirty Three . Obviously John Coltrane 's spiritual hook-ups with Pharaoh Sanders were a touchstone here, but they really get busy attacking the Art Ensemble 's Theme De Yoyo. Righteous.
