Hand-pasted labels and rubber-stamp typography on a club single often suggest some illicit activity, but with the new generic-looking Reference Library 7-inch, the work of DJ Fingers and sidekick IBI is just simply ill . On the Julius side they beef up the beats of Rockin' Julius by the late jazz trumpeter Billie Brooks (whose real name was Julius), and then they strip down David Shire 's well-sampled soundtrack theme to The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three to its head-nodding hiphop essence. Not strictly legal, but dope nonetheless.
Currently popping up locally is a blank red-label 7-inch called Bollywood Freaks put out by the mysterious Be Like Water operation. Bombay Gangstarr on the top side drops Guru 's Dwyck rhymes over some generic Bollybeats, while Hindi music fans will immediately recognize the flip as Usha Uthup 's classic Bolly-disco revision of Michael Jackson 's Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, which is - sorry, Blanket - an improvement on the original.
Brit conguero and DJ Mark "Snowboy" Cotgrove kept himself busy the year he spent away from the stage due to a wrist ailment. He's got a new daughter, a new manager, a new agent, a new label and a new album appropriately titled New Beginnings (Chilifunk). The hard-swingin' three-track preview sampler shows a sharp turn toward early-70s-style salsa duro, which makes his choice of Eddie Palmieri as a writing partner seem very wise. The eclectic club in downtown Stockholm that DJ Mad Mats and pals began as Raw Fusion has since morphed into the premier label for adventurous northern European club music, where tasty new hybrids blur the distinctions between bossa, house and jazz. You can check the best of Raw Fusion's vinyl output from Povo , A Bossa Electrica , Beatfanatic and others on the neatly compiled Inside Scandinavia disc, but this stuff is really built for the dance floor, so do yourself a favour and see Raw Fusion bossman Mad Mats get busy on the decks with the Movement crew at Roxy Blu Friday (June 25).
