The last couple of volumes in Normal's Love, Peace And Poetry psych reissue series haven't been up to the high standard of the fab early comps covering Asia, Japan and Latin America, but the recent Mexican set is stellar. Using 71's Avandaro Music Festival - the Mexican Woodstock - as a jump-off point, the focus is clearly on dope-dabbling hippie groups with a zest for heavy fuzz guitar scorch, specifically Los Dug Dugs , La Fachada de Piedra , Tres Almas En Mi Mente , the Flying Karpets and the fantastic La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata . But there's also trippy-brilliant stuff from Ernan Roch , Toncho Pilatos and La Onda de Survival and Nahuatl . Prog-psych fans will find a lot to love here. www.normal-records.com
Anyone looking deeper into the Australian pop scene of the mid-60s than the Bee Gees and the Easybeats will find some ferociously snarling garage punk delinquents lurking near the bottom of the top-40 charts. While many of the finest examples of Down Under dementia are covered by Raven 's killer Ugly Things series, the often stunning leftovers were immortalized on the It's A Kave-In comp assembled by The Livin' End zine chief Dean Mittelhauser in 87. The new 29-track reissue of It's A Kave-In (Kustom65) adds a bunch of great new discoveries to the already impressive collection of primitive pounders and rabid rave-ups, many taken from unreleased tapes or lone existing acetates. If you aren't yet hip to the glories of Mort & the Mobees , the Gemini Five and the Tol-Puddle Martyrs , now's your chance.
Belle & Carla
Even before Belle & Sebastian 's resident vinyl junkie, Chris "Beans" Geddes , started rocking Carla Whitney 's I've Been Hurt (So Many Times) at after-parties, Whitney's soulful self-titled debut album from 75 was already a prized rare groove item commanding top dinero. After Goldmine reissued Whitney's sought-after set packaged with Albert Jones 's The Facts Of Life (both produced and backed by Motown session great Choker Campbell ), Attic/Unidisc has seen the sales potential for Whitney's music and finally reissued her album in Canada. There are no liner notes, photos or any session info whatsoever, but the $12.99 price tag makes it tough to complain.
Blues you can use
Those suffering from the Bluesfest cancellation blues may find some consolation in the release of a fantastic John Broven -compiled set of early 60s Chicago juke-joint blues and raunchy R&B called Welcome To The Club (Ace). When King/Federal label talent scout Ralph Bass split for Chess in 59, Chicago's Sonny Thompson took over and began signing the hottest West Side slingers and shouters - including Syl Johnson , Eddy Clearwater , Lee "Shot" Williams , Jesse Anderson and Willie Wright - all well represented here by Thompson-produced burners that'll turn your living room into Mel's Hideaway Lounge .
