j.s. roy has changed since we first met. I first saw him when the Les Six guitarist was about 15 years old and playing in the adorable teenage boy Montreal ska band the Undercovers.
As the boys grew up and started listening to new and different kinds of music, their style changed, moving into more 80s, new-wavy territory, becoming known as the Stills.
Roy, now 24 (I can't fucking believe it) left the Stills (who are still around), came to Toronto and formed the terribly mature Les Six, a rich, sexy, darkly romantic-sounding ensemble who have been compared to the Fall with Interpol playing killer keyboards.
"I'm a bit younger than most of the people I play with. So when people mention bands like Joy Division and New Order, I've heard of them, but they weren't a huge part of my life.
"I'm a bit too young for the Fall, but Interpol, definitely. I'm more into Air and Radiohead. OK Computer is one of my favourite records. Donovan (Gopaul, Les Six vocalist and Roy's songwriting partner), is more into Joy Division and David Bowie."
He met Gopaul while the two were working at Juice for Life at Queen and Crawford.
"When it was dead we got to talking about music. I was in a crappy band called the Cities and he was in a crappy band called the Assets. Neither of us was digging what we were doing, so we hooked up, but we weren't thinking of starting a band."
Before they knew it, four more members were added (to make up Les Six) including the lovely and talented Barbi Castelvi on bass, aka DJ Barbi of the Bovine and Barbi of Keyop, the Spy, Rail Tec and Rocket Tits, who is known to add a stylish element to just about anything.
Castelvi met Gopaul when he was working at Tequila Bookworm, where keyboardist Kevin Temple also works.
"Essentially, our whole band works at either Tequila, the Bovine, the 360 or the Shanghai."
I tell you, never, ever underestimate the spooky power of Queen West.
