If you thought the Swedish invasion was over and everyone could rest easy now that the Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg, Nick Lidstrom, Johan Franzen, Mikael Samuelsson and Niklas Kronwall have successfully returned the Stanley Cup to Detroit, guess again.
The next wave of Swedish conquerors has already arrived in Toronto in the form of Gothenburg’s Oholics, who’ll be tearing up the Silver Dollar with an amped-?up psych rock assault for three nights starting this evening.
I got early warning of the threat posed by the Oholics last year when Ebbot Lundberg from the Soundtrack of Our Lives mentioned he’d been recording some crazy local dudes at Svenska Grammofonstudion who reminded him of a heavier version of forward-?looking Swedish psych duo Hansson & Karlsson. But that was before singer Christoffer Rydeståhl and guitarist Peter Freibergs had built the Oholics into the current six-?man attack unit with bassist Hannes Thunberg, drummer Niklas Hjort, keyboardist Axel Mord and sitar twanger Anders Thunarf, who also operates the deadly spacebox.
Their trippy debut cover of Pink Floyd’s Lucy Leave, recorded in honour of the late, great Syd Barrett, only hints at the mind-?melting whump to come from the Oholics, as you’ll discover when they preview their forthcoming EP (due in September) at the Dollar.
