10 Ontario students received a scholarship for being leaders in their community

Ten students from Ontario are being awarded scholarships by TD Bank Group for their outstanding leadership in their communities. 

TD announced recipients for the Scholarships for Community Leadership program on May 25. 

In order to qualify for the program, students must be in their last year of high school, maintain an average grade of 75 per cent in their most recently completed school year and have demonstrated leadership in their community, according to TD’s website. 

This year, the students will receive up to $70,000 for tuition and living expenses, while also being given opportunities for paid summer employment, peer networking and mentorship.

The 2022/2023 TD Scholarships for Community Leadership recipients from Ontario are: 

Eshal Ali

She has dedicated herself to building equity for underrepresented groups by establishing several committees as a school board student trustee. 

Ahmad Elbayoumi

He has worked to further student education in the political process by launching FX Model Parliament, a political debate club, at his school. 

Jay Hung

He honoured his late mother by establishing a non-profit that dispatched more than 40 volunteers to perform labour-intensive household tasks for hospital patients. 

Sophia Lezhanska

She creates a 2SLGBTQ+ Inclusivity Club and volunteered at Ukrainian Canadian Social Services to honour her heritage. 

Siobhan Marie

She has dedicated herself to empowering marginalized students in rural areas by founding a healthy living program to teach substance use prevention, mental wellness and physical health. 

Kyla Momanyi

As the only Black senior cadet at the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, she successfully lobbied the organization to permit natural hairstyles, to lift self-esteem and pride among Black squadron members. 

Naomi Musa

She became the Student Trustee on the Toronto District School Board, where she represented 240,000 students in the pursuit of equity, anti-oppression, and anti-racism policies. 

Mackenzie Nolan

A member of Missanabie Cree First Nation, she has worked to support marginalized groups after the pandemic. 

Sammie Orr

She was elected as a youth representative on Stratford’s municipal Energy and Environment Committee, founded a school Eco Club, and started a Waste Reduction Group. 

Alya Rasoul

She founded the Muslim Student Association & Allies club and advised the Durham Regional Police Chief of Police on ways to strengthen relations with youth. 

Applications for students looking to apply to the TD scholarship who are starting college or university in Sept. 2024 will open in Sept. 2023.
