It’s a combination of inspired civil disobedience and wrestling theatrics that has created a wildly fun demonstration against pot prohibition. The slogan ‘Here We Are Now, Entertain Us’ is something Toronto Hash Mob latched onto early in our activism.

Protesting prohibition can’t be boring because people won’t want to attend. Our success is in our attendance numbers, which required rally co-founder Chris Goodwin to work with YD Square in January to access their services, such as a booming sound system, a clean up crew and security.

Wanting to entertain 12,000+ people at a protest comes at a cost. This year’s bill will be $24,000.

Sponsorship pays for everything and Goodwin donates a second job’s worth of time to organizing. Despite how sexy the stage is with sponsorship banners, no money is made by anyone involved in 4/20.

4/20 looks like any other Toronto festival at YD Square, but what you are actually seeing is open civil disobedience disguised as satire.

Officially we are listed as 420 Comedy Festival and we have great lineup of activists and comedians.

New for the ninth annual 4/20 are 22 booths. We encouraged renters to use their space in the spirit of our original 4/20 by not focusing so much on sales, but providing added value to the rally. Attendees can anticipate three dab bars, tie-dye workshops, meeting an Olympian, a famous smuggler and getting a good selfie with a 95 gram joint.

Germ prevention has our own Mastah Rollah adding a glass filter tip to the cannabis cannon this year for quick alcohol swab swipes.
